Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator
Work out the engagement rate of an Instagram post or Reel two ways: by followers (what most brands ask for) and by reach (more accurate for a single post).

How Instagram engagement rate is calculated
There are two common formulas, and brands use both:
- By followers: (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100. Simple, and easy to compare across accounts.
- By reach: the same interactions ÷ accounts reached × 100. This compares engagement with the people who actually saw the post, so it is the fairer number for judging one post or Reel.
A post with 450 likes, 30 comments, 40 saves and 20 shares on a 10,000-follower account has 540 interactions, which is a 5.4% rate by followers. If 6,500 accounts saw it, the rate by reach is about 8.3%.
Where to find the numbers
- Switch to a professional (creator or business) account, which unlocks Insights.
- Open the post or Reel and tap View insights.
- Copy likes, comments, saves and shares, and the accounts reached figure.
- Use your follower count from your profile for the by-followers rate.
What is a good Instagram engagement rate?
| Rate (by followers) | Rule of thumb |
|---|---|
| Under 1% | Below average |
| 1% to 3% | Average |
| 3% to 6% | Good |
| Above 6% | Very high |
These bands are informal rules of thumb, not official Instagram figures. Smaller accounts usually have higher rates than large ones, and Reels, carousels and single photos all behave differently.
Why saves and shares matter more than likes
A like takes a tap. A save or a share takes intent, so they signal that the post was useful or worth passing on. That is why this calculator counts them separately and why a carousel with fewer likes but many saves can be a better result than a photo with plenty of likes.
How to raise your Instagram engagement
- Open with a clear hook on the first slide or the first second of a Reel.
- Make carousels and checklists that people want to save for later.
- Ask one specific question in the caption rather than a generic one.
- Reply to comments in the first hour and keep the conversation going.
- Remove bots and inactive followers, which pull the rate down. If your reach suddenly fell, use the shadowban checker before blaming the algorithm.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use followers or reach?
Use followers when a brand asks for a standard figure, since that is the most common method. Use reach to judge how well a single post performed with the people who saw it. Always say which one you used.
Do saves and shares count as engagement?
Yes. They are strong signals of interest, and many brands include them. If you leave them at 0 the result will be lower than the full figure.
Why is my engagement rate lower on Reels?
Reels reach many people who do not follow you. When reach is much larger than your follower count, the rate by followers can look high and the rate by reach lower, because most viewers are casual.
Is this the same as the engagement rate brands see?
It uses the standard formulas, but each brand or tool may count differently, for example leaving out shares. Ask which method they use.
