Recover a Deleted or Deactivated Instagram Account
People say their account is "deleted" or "deactivated" when it may be neither. Instagram treats a temporary deactivation, a deletion you requested and a disabled account very differently, and what you can do depends on which one you have.

If you deactivated it yourself, log back in to reactivate it. If you requested deletion, Instagram says the profile is removed permanently after 30 days, so log in as soon as possible. If a message says your account was disabled, you need to appeal instead.
Deleted, deactivated or disabled: which is yours?
- Deactivated (temporary). You chose to hide your profile. Your photos, comments and likes are hidden until you log back in.
- Deleted (permanent). You asked Instagram to delete the account. Per the Help Center, the profile and information are permanently deleted after about 30 days, and during that time the content is hidden from other people.
- Disabled or suspended. Instagram took the account away. You see a message at login. This is not something you did yourself, and the fix is an appeal. See the disabled account guide.
If you deactivated your account
- Open the Instagram app or website and log in with your usual username and password.
- Follow any prompts. Logging in normally reactivates the profile in most cases.
- Wait a little. Photos and followers can take some time to show again.
- If login fails, use "Forgot password" and check the email and phone number on the account, including your spam folder.
Instagram limits how often you can deactivate, reported as once a week, so you may not be able to deactivate again straight away.
If you requested deletion
Your options depend on how long ago you asked.
- Within the first 30 days. The profile is hidden but, according to the Help Center, not yet permanently removed. Try logging in with your username and password and follow any prompt to keep the account. Older Help Center pages say deleted accounts cannot be reactivated, so do not count on it, and do it quickly.
- After 30 days. The account and its content are normally gone for good, and Instagram cannot bring it back. You can start a new account, though the old username may not be available.
Check the current wording on Instagram's own delete or deactivate page, as the steps and timing can change.
If you cannot log in at all
- Try your username, email and phone number, one at a time.
- Reset your password from the login screen, using the email or text Instagram sends.
- Check for a security email from Instagram that lets you undo a change.
- If someone else may have taken over the account, see the recovery options in the Help Center and change your passwords everywhere afterwards.
Do not pay for recovery
People who offer to "recover deleted accounts" for a fee are scammers. They ask for your password, a verification code, your ID or money. Nobody except Instagram can restore an account, and Instagram does not charge for it.
If it cannot be recovered
- Start a fresh account with a new email address.
- Tell followers on your other platforms.
- Next time, download your data from Settings before deleting.
This guide is general information based on platform help pages and user reports, not an official statement from the platform. Rules and timings change, so check the platform's own notice and Help Center. Never pay anyone who promises to unban an account, and never share passwords, codes or ID with them.
Frequently asked questions
Can I recover a deleted Instagram account?
Possibly, but only if you act inside the window Instagram gives you. The Help Center says deletion becomes permanent after about 30 days, and older pages say deleted accounts cannot be reactivated. Log in as soon as you can and do not rely on it.
How do I reactivate a deactivated Instagram account?
Log in with your username and password on the app or website. In most cases that reactivates the profile.
Is deactivating the same as deleting?
No. Deactivating is temporary and hides your profile. Deleting is a request to remove the account permanently.
My account says disabled. Is that the same thing?
No. A disabled account was removed by Instagram, so you need to appeal. Use the disabled account guide.
Will my old username be available again?
Not always. After a deletion, the name may not be reusable, so be ready to choose a new one.
