Instagram Account Disabled? How to Appeal and Recover It
A disabled Instagram account feels final, but many people do get a review. The key is to appeal quickly, once, and honestly, and to avoid the scams that target locked-out users.

Open the message in the app and request a review, check the email on the account, and do it soon because sources report a time limit of about 30 days. Appeal once. Never pay a recovery service.

What "disabled" means
Instagram has removed access to the account, usually because it believes the account broke the Terms of Use or Community Guidelines, or because it looked compromised. It is more serious than an action block or a reach limit. It is different from deleting your own account.
Common reasons
- Spam or automation, including bots and mass follow/unfollow tools.
- Impersonation or a fake or misleading profile.
- Repeated community guidelines violations, such as harassment, nudity or dangerous content.
- Copyright or trademark reports.
- Many reports from other users.
- The account was hacked and used to post rule-breaking content.
- Suspected underage use.
How to appeal, step by step
- Do not make a new account yet. Using the original login to appeal is the path that works.
- Open the Instagram app and log in. If a disabled message appears, tap the option to disagree or request a review.
- Follow the prompts. You may be asked to confirm your details or to verify who you are, for example with a photo. Only do this inside Instagram, never through a link sent by a stranger.
- Check your email and spam folder for a notice from Instagram. It may say why the account was disabled.
- Send one clear appeal. Use the appeal message generator if you need wording that is short, calm and factual.
- Wait for the reply. Review times vary and are not guaranteed.
If you think it was hacked
Say so in your appeal, and use Instagram's account recovery options. Change your email and password, turn on two-factor authentication and remove devices you do not recognise as soon as you regain access.
How long does it take?
Instagram does not publish a guaranteed review time. User reports range from days to several weeks, and some appeals are not accepted, especially after repeated or serious violations. Some sources report you can appeal for about 30 days after the account is disabled, so act promptly.
Beware of recovery scams
People who say they can "hack", "bribe" or "unlock" your account are scammers. They often ask for your password, a verification code, your ID or a payment. Only Instagram can restore an account. If you already paid or shared details, change your passwords right away and report the scam to your local consumer protection or fraud agency.
After you get it back
- Remove third-party apps and automation tools.
- Review recent posts for anything that may break the rules.
- Download your data as a backup.
- Post normally for a few weeks and avoid bursts of activity.
This guide is general information based on platform help pages and user reports, not an official statement from the platform. Rules and timings change, so check the platform's own notice and Help Center. Never pay anyone who promises to unban an account, and never share passwords, codes or ID with them.
Frequently asked questions
Can I appeal more than once?
Send one clear appeal and wait. Sending many appeals does not speed things up and can make the case look like spam.
Should I create a new account while I wait?
It is better to wait for the review. Using a new account to evade a disabled one can break the rules again.
Is there a fee to get my account back?
No. Anyone asking for payment to restore an Instagram account is running a scam.
What if there is no appeal button?
Check your email for instructions, update the app and log in again. If you still cannot find it, use the Instagram Help Center for the current process.
